Sculptures :: Birds :: Large Birds :: Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans)

I collected a specimen of this exceptional bird from the Oceanographic Research Institute in Plettenberg Bay. This albatross has a powerful 3 metre wingspan making it the largest soaring bird in the Southern Oceans, yet its secondary feathers are shorter than those of a fowl. I was fascinated by the structure of the toes. The inner toe has two digits, the middle toe has three digits and the outer toe four digits. It also has special nostrils designed to desalinate sea water. What remarkable adaptations for a life at sea!
