African Bull Elephant (Laxodonta africana)

The unusual composition of the elephant pulling his massive bulk out of a river bed forms a triangular silhouette, giving the sculpture a firm grounding. The attention given to the base is of equal importance with the textural difference between the grasses, sand and wooden logs. I spent many, many hours capturing the subtle changes of the surface texture of the elephant between the folded and tightly stretched skin. The bronze has solid sterling silver tusks and garnets set into the eye sockets.
