Sculptures :: Wildlife :: “Aftand” Bull Elephant

African Elephant (Laxodonta africana) “Aftand”

This is a study of the famous bull elephant AFTAND from the Knysna forest. Note the bullet hole and scar tissue in his ear. As one of the last remaining “Big Foot” in the Knysna forest he carries a tusk of a lost friend for companionship. He was eventually shot by a forester who hid his tusks which are now kept in the vaults of the Museum in George. I have had the privilege of seeing them which was a gut-wrenching experience. I feel so strongly about the need to preserve our wildlife heritage and to combat poaching.
